To download complete maps for the GPS navigation in the N95, the first choice is Nokia’s Maploader, easily downloaded and installed. With maps of almost all countries available, you’ll probably get very short on space on your micro-SD card. One way around this is downloading and backing up countries you will not need every day.
File storage directory for GPS maps
But managing the maps for GPS and backing up maps of single countries is not done by point and click.. The GPS maps are stored in single squares covering the area of 50 to 1,000 sqkm (depending on the street-density etc.) with hex-filenames, that don’t make sense to me yet. What I do know is, that there’s no folder like “Germany” or “England” you can simply backup on your harddrive. The Maploader stores the files in a directory-tree with names “0″ to “9″ and “a” to “f”, the signs available in hex. In each of these directories there are similar directories named “0″ to “f”, therefore you have 256 directories in the folder X:\Private\20001f63\diskcache\ on your micro-SD card that hold the data for all countries that you download. Each country provides uniquely named square-files except for areas at the border between two countries that are included in both country’s maps.
Howto backup countries from maploader
So the clue for downloading and storing your maps in an easily accessible backup is downloading and backing up only one country at a time; just do this:
1. Delete all directories in “X:\Private\20001f63\diskcache\” except the 4 files in the directory.
2. Download a country with maploader.
3. Backup the directory “X:\Private\20001f63\diskcache\” to a directory, that you name with the country you just downloaded.
4. Start over with step 1.
I didn’t get any difference between the files in die diskcache yet, Cachedatheader.cdt, config.cfg, ffffffff.cdt and qt. You can back them up or just use the ones you have already. They obviously just store the last file you downloaded etc.
Format your micro-SD with FAT32 to save storage space
There’s one more important point: The map files are pretty small, some of them are less then one kb; so with 10 MB downloaded files you’ll probably fill 25Megs of your micro-SD card, because by default it’s formated with FAT16 and each of the 1kb-files fills 16kb on your card; so back your card up and format it in FAT32 in your cardreader you hopefully have. That saves you at least 50% of the space used by the maps on your card. Though I read, that micro-SD and S60 cannot handle FAT32, I tried it and it works.

is it free to download maps from maploader
May 14, 2007 at 5:12 pm |
Yes, it is. you just need to start Nokia-Maps once on your mobile to get all the config-files written to your storage card. After this you can simply connect your mobile (or the storage card in a card reader) to your notebook and download maps.

I think, for download and backups country maps via MapLoader you just need only E:\Private\20001f63\diskcache\ folder on your SD, no more config files. You can manualy create those folders on memory card.

It seems to take forever to download the maps (maybe its my connection but hey) as in it predicts 13hrs to download 60mg…any ideas on how to solve this?
May 18, 2007 at 7:04 pm |
The only idea I have is: Download to a harddisk, USB-stick or card-reader; then it’s way faster, maybe 80-90% less time required for downloads compared to downloads to your mobile; if you do that already – no idea, sorry…
The Nokia servers seem very busy and I don’t think that’s gonna get better in the next 3 months, since N95-sales are just taking up.

maploader crashes because they signed a deal with the devil. you must have sp2, for xp you must have dotnetfx.exe 2.02 or better. I had to get 3
.0 and microsoft installer 3.0 as well as service pack 2 and you have to have an up to date windows media player 10 or better but thats for media transfer.

where can I find maps of my city in my country, or how can I make my city map my self and then load into my N95 ?
my possition is Makassar (Indonesia)

try smart2go.com am happily downloading maps for over 100 countries. All works well as nokia bought out this company
June 6, 2007 at 12:34 pm |
thx kimbo, great idea. smart2go IS Nokia Maps and the Maploader. Anyway, the level of detail of maps for 2nd- and 3rd-world countries can be quite low, so Makassar is probably not fully covered on the Indonesia map.
The *.cdt-files used by Nokia maps are Coreldraw templates, so u might wanna play around with this to generate maps. But – I don’t think it’s an easy task…

Nokia Map Loader only works on Windows, requires.net framework, and if you add a new map the map loader deletes all your existing maps so you’ll have to download them all over again.
But you don’t need Nokia Map Loader! http://nokiamaps.moo.no links to all maps directly on the Nokia/smart2go server. You can download them using any browser on any operating system of your choice. There’s no need to install anything on a computer: perfect for Mac or Linux users, or for when you’re on the road and you can’t install any software, like in a hotel, school, at work, or in an internet cafe.
If your phone talks WiFi or if you have a fast 3G connection you can even use the web browser in your phone so you can add and update maps without even touching a computer.
This site has maps for all versions of Nokia Maps: the current version, old versions, and the new beta version.

Hi! I bought a GPS from ebay wich comes with smart2go software. The thing is that i need a map from Brazil (where I live) and I just can’t find a single “brazil.cdt” file. Instead, I got a root with all the 0 to 9 and a to f files that don’t work on my GPS. Can you help me?? The brand of the gps is HSL and the software is smart2go. Thank you very much!!!!
